Dear
FIDIC launches Climate Change Charter for global infrastructure sector @ COP26

As the global political leaders are in the final phase of concluding their negotiations at COP26 in Glasgow, I am delighted to share with you the FIDIC Climate Change Charter launched today. This action is very much aligned with FIDIC's core principles; sustainability is an essential element of FIDIC's 2020-2024 strategic plan.

The climate challenge is one that no section of society can ignore if we are to achieve a sustainable quality of life. Never has it been so crucial that the entire infrastructure sector is engaged in the debate on how we address this issue to tackle the significance and scale of this issue going forward. Due to the urgency of the climate crisis and scale of changes required, FIDIC is motivated to outline its leadership response on behalf of the consulting engineering community.

This FIDIC charter sets out how we address climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience of the built environment in the years and decades to come. The charter outlines a series of actions to be taken by the following stakeholders:

  • FIDIC itself
  • FIDIC member associations
  • Project teams and schemes
  • Companies
  • Individual professional engineers

Under the leadership and direction of FIDIC President, Tony Barry and the entire Board, this charter underwent the most comprehensive consultation to date of a FIDIC policy document receiving high levels of support and will continue to evolve. As noted by respondents, this charter is only the beginning. There will be guides, briefings, notes and tools that also need developing by a dedicated FIDIC Climate Change Task Group to assist FIDIC, member associations, companies, and projects to commit to moving forward to achieving Net Zero.

In addition, a dedicated campaign website has been developed under the banner FIDIC for Global Goals to aid this initiative. The website will serve as a long term campaign supporting the United Nations Global Goals and allow for signing up to FIDIC's charter and serve as a resource hub for content, case studies, and best practices in the industry. The FIDIC for Global Goals website can be viewed on the link below.

I would encourage all FIDIC member associations, member organisations, individuals and the entire global infrastructure and built environment sector to meet this challenge and sign up on the link below.

Thank you for your support of this truly global aspirational charter that places engineers at the heart of change to help meet the climate challenge.

With best wishes,

Dr Nelson Ogunshakin
FICE, CEng, FREng, OBE
Chief Executive, FIDIC
